Cosgrove Hall Films is a Europe’s largest and most prolific animation company. It is alo one of the few studios in the world that have the the ability to produce all three types of animation (drawn / 2D, stop-motion puppet and CGI) under one roof.
It was first created in 1976 by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall, Cosgrove Hall has grown to become one of the world’s premier animation studios, producing countless hours of animation each year and have had their programmes viewed in over eighty countries to this very day.
Their first ever animated series was Chorton and the Wheelies. Since then they have brought many favourites to us such as Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and The Wind In The Willows.
Sales to over 150 countries bears testament to the worldwide appeal of Cosgrove Hall’s productions, as well as accolades of national and international prizes including six BAFTAs, two International Emmys plus countless other awards and nominations.
Cosgrove Hall Films is housed in modern 25,000 sq ft custom-built studios, complete with the latest lighting and camera facilities, workshops for puppet construction, set-building areas, and even a special wardrobe department where all the puppet stars are dressed.
In 2006 Cosgrove Hall became the UK's leading production house for Toon Boom Harmony. As a major end user of this exciting software, Cosgrove Hall brings drawn animation fully back into its Manchester studios, and confirms the company's commitment to remain a major producer of 2D drawn animation within the United Kingdom with the exception of Theodore which is their first CGI graphic animation.
In 2008 the company made all of its staff except for 4 people redundant and had to move to an office in Granada Studios in Manchester. Thus ending 30 years of the studio in Chorlton. The reasons are complex but it was mostly as a result of the company's owner, ITV, lack of interest in investing in Cosgrove Hall because of the broadcaster's failing financial condition. Additionally the UK animation production industry in general is struggling because of increasingly tough competition from state-subsidised production in countries such as Canada, France and the far east where the industry is growing and very buoyant.
